Alright, let's talk roofing contractors. You need a new roof, or maybe a repair, and you're probably thinking, "Where do I even start?" It's a big investment, and frankly, there are a lot of folks out there who'll take your money and leave you with a headache. I've been doing this for years here in Warwick, and I've seen it all. So, I'm going to give you the straight goods on how to pick a good one.

Questions to Ask Every Roofer

When you've got a potential contractor in front of you, don't be shy. You're hiring them for a critical job on your home. Here's what you need to hit them with:

  • Are you licensed and insured in Rhode Island? This isn't optional. They need a valid RI Contractor's Registration (look for the number). And insurance? They need general liability and workers' compensation. If they can't show you current certificates, send 'em packing. No exceptions.
  • How long have you been in business under this name? Longevity matters. A company that's been around for a while, especially locally, usually means they're doing something right and stand behind their work.
  • Can you provide local references? I'm not talking about their cousin. I mean recent customers, ideally in Warwick or a nearby town like Cranston or East Greenwich. Ask for a few, and actually call them. Ask about their experience, the crew, cleanup, and if they'd hire them again.
  • What's your warranty on labor and materials? A good contractor will offer a warranty on their workmanship, usually 5-10 years, on top of the manufacturer's warranty on the shingles. Make sure you get it in writing.
  • Who will be doing the actual work? Your employees or subcontractors? This is important. If they're using subs, you need to know if those subs are also properly insured and vetted. We primarily use our own trained crews at Paramount Roofing Solutions because we can control the quality better that way.
  • What's your plan for protecting my property during the job? This includes landscaping, driveways, and collecting nails. A good crew will lay down tarps, use a magnetic sweeper, and leave your yard cleaner than they found it.

What to Look for in a Quote

Don't just compare the bottom line. A cheap quote often means corners are being cut. Here's what a solid quote should include:

  • Detailed Scope of Work: It should clearly list everything they're going to do. Removal of old roof, specific shingle type and color, underlayment type, flashing, ventilation (ridge vents, soffit vents), drip edge, chimney flashing, and any necessary repairs to the decking.
  • Material Specifications: Don't just say "shingles." It should specify the brand, type (e.g., architectural laminate), and color. Same for underlayment, ice and water shield, and any other components.
  • Payment Schedule: A reputable contractor won't ask for 100% upfront. Expect a reasonable deposit (often 1/3 to 1/2), with the balance due upon satisfactory completion.
  • Cleanup Plan: How will they handle debris? Where will the dumpster go?
  • Warranty Information: Both labor and material warranties should be mentioned or attached.

If a quote is just a single number on a napkin, that's a problem.

Red Flags You Can't Ignore

Some things should make you hit the brakes immediately:

  • Door-to-door solicitations, especially after a storm. Storm chasers are notorious for doing shoddy work and disappearing.
  • High-pressure sales tactics. "Sign today or the price goes up!" is a classic trick. Take your time, get multiple quotes.
  • Asking for all the money upfront, or only cash. Huge red flag.
  • No physical address or only a PO Box. A legitimate business has a physical location, even if it's just an office.
  • Prices that are significantly lower than other bids. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. They're likely cutting corners on materials, labor, or insurance.
  • Refusal to provide references or proof of insurance/licensing. Walk away.

How to Verify Legitimacy

You've got their info, now check it:

  • Check the RI Contractor Registration Board: Go to the Rhode Island Department of Business Regulation website. You can look up their contractor registration number and see if it's active and if there are any complaints.
  • Verify Insurance: Ask their insurance company for a Certificate of Insurance directly. Don't just take a copy from the contractor; make sure it's current and sent from the insurer.
  • Online Reviews: Check Google, Yelp, BBB (Better Business Bureau). Look for a consistent pattern of positive reviews, but also see how they respond to negative ones. No one's perfect, but how they handle issues says a lot.
  • Google their business name and the owner's name: See what comes up. Any news articles? Lawsuits?

Choosing a roofer isn't just about getting the job done; it's about peace of mind. You want someone who's going to be around if there's an issue down the road, especially with our tough New England winters and those salty air conditions near Narragansett Bay. Do your homework, ask the tough questions, and trust your gut. It'll save you a lot of grief in the long run.
